RAE 100 - The Royal Aircraft Establishment Legacy since 1918
Written & compiled by Farnborough Air Sciences Trust Trustees: Dr Graham Rood FRAeS & Richard Gardner MRAeS.

Published by Farnborough Air Sciences Trust in 2018 to celebrate the centenary of the formation of the RAE.

Celebrating the unique and outstanding achievements of the Royal Aircraft Establishment since its formation in 1918 at Farnborough in the development, evaluation and testing of game-changing aeronautical innovations.

No other single location can claim such a unique technical contribution to the development of aviation as Farnborough, in Hampshire, England. It saw the birth of British military aviation in the form of balloons and kites, with the establishment of the Army's Balloon School and Balloon Factory, followed by the building and first successful flight of a powered, controlled aeroplane, and then the establishment of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Aircraft Factory. But from the official formation of the Royal Aircraft Establishment in 1918, Farnborough became the centre of a national aeronautical research, development and test and evaluation effort that became world renowned for excellence in all aspects of aviation progress.

This book reflects the highlights of that amazing story, and has been prepared alongside the special RAE Centenary Anniversary exhibition held in 2018 at the Farnborough Air Sciences Trust (FAST) Museum. The works and illustration draw on the huge FAST historical archive that has been created since the Trust was formed in 1993 to preserve the key historic aviation buildings on the site and to safeguard the RAE records and archives for future generations.

The authors have based the content on illustrated RAE themed lectures that they have given to branches of the Royal Aeronautical Society nationwide and to other audiences ranging from university and school students to aviation organisations and FAST Association presentations.

This book is dedicated to the work and memory of all those thousands of RAE scientists, engineers, technologists, test pilots and other specialists and administrators who over more than 100 years helped make aviation the world-changing phenomenon that it is today.
